Preventing Workplace Fatalities
According to research from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 5,486 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States in 2022 — this staggering statistic means one life was lost on job every 96 minutes.
Our team of loss control consultants is dedicated to helping our policyholders avoid these tragic circumstances. In addition to following state and federal safety protocols, here are eight suggestions to help avoid a serious workplace incident:
- Keep lines of communication open.
- Implement a system to track and learn from near-misses.
- Involve employees in safety processes whenever possible.
- Perform pre-job risk assessments, especially for non-routine tasks.
- Provide job-specific safety training and education.
- Observe employees working to ensure they are engaging in safe work practices.
- Use leading indicators to better assess the risk of serious injuries and fatalities.
- Incorporate safety in the engineering and design phase of processes instead of after the fact.
